If you’re capturing water off your roof and are noticing that your tank is full and overflowing try and start storing some excess water in your soil. Soil – that has had compost added regularly and that has built it’s organic matter levels up – can hold a whole lot more water than I first thought.

By adding more water to the soil than the rain is giving it will build up the water table so when the warmer weather starts to come around it’ll have a ‘water bank’ that it can continue to access. To keep the water in your soil longer make sure you’ve mulched adequately.
